The Meaning of My Art
“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear, and the oldest and strongest kind of fear is fear of the unknown.” H.P Lovecraft Like all people, I go through many emotions. Like all people, I have ups and downs. Like all people, these various emotions spill out into my everyday life. Unlike all people, […]
I had two fun-filled days painting in Stellenbosch with the well-known artist, Glendine
I was in Stellenbosch for a few days and decided to arrange a “painting-date” with my artist friend, Glendine. We had such a great time and we documented our process to share it with you.
Reflection on my Art journey of 2020
2021 – A NEW YEAR – A NEW STORY TO BE TOLD (Painted) At last… A new year, a new page, and in my case, yet another new town. It is 2021, 2020 might have been one of the longest, and simultaneously, in some weird way, one of the shortest years ever in my life.Nobody […]
Fishes in my Art
Fishes make their appearances on my canvasses and other objects often, mostly uninvited but not unwelcome at all, as I love their symbolism.
For me, they symbolize so much, but, above all, adaptability and transformation.
I feel that new beginnings is crawling up to me. I wish it was as easy as 1, 2, 3 to break out and to break through!
You are an Eagle in a Budgie cage, you have to break out and spread your wings and fly… I am on the merge of something new in my life, I cannot say what, as I don’t know yet. I see, or rather feel, all the signs and I feel restless, very restless. Omens keep […]
Just look at this! Odd Looking Tree captured my world as an artist perfectly for me, Mariaan.
Almost a year ago Rian did a marketing video for me for my first ever one-man exhibition in Bloemfontein at Kotze Art Gallery The video was very specific for the gallery and exhibition marketing but it was so great that I did not want to just let it “die a still death”. I asked […]
What we call the beginning is often the end. And to make an end is to make a beginning.
Displace: A new series: I have been playing around with options in my mind for a new body of work. I need a specific series to work towards as I am very scatter-minded and get distracted easily. Also, it gives me focus and helps me to be more dedicated. Over the years a theme of […]
Winds of change
My paintings hatch… bit by bit, starting as a little vague idea in my head, sometimes I walk with the possibility of an image for days, weeks, even months before it gets to a point of breaking through, even then, I usually do not know precisely where the image will end up once I put […]
Secrets Revealed: Images Of Hands In My Art
Hands: I cannot do this blog post about hands, without combining it with motivational quotes as each of my hand’s paintings are very specific in conveying a message. Quotes can express in words, what you feel in your heart. I try to capture a feeling in my hand’s paintings of compassion, understanding, giving, support, and […]
When time ran out
Today I want to share three paintings of a range of paintings I am working on for an art exhibition. The theme of the exhibition: “From broken open to breakthrough”. I got a few rugged canvases from a friend in Mossel Bay more than a year ago, I picture an old lady, asking her husband […]
Kyknet Ontbytsake Insert 2014
Earlier this year, Ontbytsake, a Kyknet Television journal program promoting local artists venues and tourism in South Africa, made this wonderful little insert of the gallery I had in Mossel Bay. I recently moved out of this studio, now working from home, and supplying to other accredited Art Galleries as well as to my shop in […]
This is me, where I come from, how I think.
I was born on a farm cradled by mountains in the Aliwal North district of the Eastern Cape. My father Kobus Kotze is a well-known landscape artist. The hours I spent painting with him in his art studio opened my mind to art. My mother Joe Kotze only started painting later in her life. She […]
